A destination wedding story
Erin & Douglas
An American wedding at Château de Boulogne — Ardèche, South of France
That summer evening in Ardèche, time stood still.
Erin and Douglas came from the United States with a clear, beautiful idea: to get married in France, in a place carved by centuries, far from the noise of the world. They chose Château de Boulogne — a medieval fortress rising above the village of Saint-Michel-de-Boulogne, in the heart of the Ardèche.
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries and now a classified historic monument, the château has watched over the Ardèche valley for more than nine hundred years. Its ruins offer something rare for a destination wedding: stone arches framing cypress trees and rolling hills, a vaulted room for the first dance, wildflowers growing between centuries-old walls. Not a fairytale castle too polished to feel real — a living place, imperfect, authentic, just like their love.
And then there was the light. Ardèche summer light has a way of slowing time. As the sun descends behind the hills of the Vivarais, every scene becomes a painting. Golden hour here is not a moment — it is a state of grace.
The ceremony

The château

“There was a rare simplicity between them. No performance, no posing. Just two people looking at each other as if the rest of the world had ceased to exist.”
That serenity, that quiet complicity — it was there from the first moments of their open-air ceremony beneath the château stones, and it never left the day.
Douglas smiling as he took Erin's hands during the vows. Their spontaneous burst of laughter during cocktail hour. The first dance in the stone vaulted room, surrounded by loved ones who had crossed oceans to be there. And that golden hour moment, arms wrapped around each other in the warm Ardèche light, Erin throwing her head back in pure joy.
You can't create moments like these. You can only be ready to catch them.

Thank you, Erin & Douglas, for trusting me with your day, and for crossing the Atlantic to get married in this corner of the Ardèche I love so deeply.

Planning a destination wedding in the Ardèche?
Ardèche rewards those who seek it out. No major cities, no mass tourism — just wild nature, stone villages, and a Southern light that sculpts faces differently. Château de Boulogne is easily accessible via Lyon (1h30) or Montpellier (1h30), and the region offers beautiful character accommodation for hosting family and friends traveling from afar.
If you're dreaming of a château wedding in the South of France, Ardèche has everything — and very few photographers who truly know it. I do.
